Summary - PJ is the prime suspect
in the case of Maggie's murder when all the evidence he gives seems to
point towards himself. He says there was a message on his answering machine,
but there's no message there when they check it, PJ says he was going with
Maggie into Witness Protection, but there's no evidence proving it, plus
there was the fight Maggie and he faked which to others would look like
a motive. In the middle of the investigation Natalie Anderson, a young
schitzophrenic women who Maggie had befriended and was trying to help arrives
to see Maggie. PJ had seen Natalie at the beginning of the episode, but
only her back, and due to their similarities and the fact that Natalie
was wearing Maggie's coat PJ believed it was Maggie.
When told the news of Maggie's death, Natalie worked herself up to the point where she started claiming that she killed Maggie. When the detectives interview her though, she tells them that she must have lit the fire when she was having one of her blackouts, so she's dismissed as a suspect because she thought Maggie had died in the fire. On her way out she sees PJ and tells him that Maggie talked about him. And how Maggie told her he had warm hands and then they talk about how Maggie wanted a family.
When PJ comes back from dropping her home there's a sighting of Stewie Forbes who had been untracable until that time. He's brought in for questioning, and then he claims he saw PJ shoot Maggie at the railyards. With this new evidence PJ is arrested just as Natalie comes but in with some things Maggie had lent her. Natalie gets worked up but PJ assures her everything will be fine, and as he's been taken off the rest of the Heelers assure him they're on his side. Ben urges Detective Paul Donald to check the answering machine tape for any traces of the message so they could compare it against the sample PJ had given, hoping this would put PJ in the clear.
The results come back clear, so PJ is released and PJ believes that Stewie Forbes was payed to claim he saw PJ at the railyards. When they go to talk to Stewie however, he's been killed. But after searching his house, his person then eventually the car they find the money he was paid off with. Benny Matthews then confirms (after some intimidation by PJ and Ben) that Stewie and himself were in Melbourne the night of the murder doing a drug deal.
That night PJ's at the pub talking to Ben, Jack and Jo when one of them mentions Natalie had come in claiming that she'd seen a gun near where she lived. They hadn't told PJ because it had turned out a dead end, and they believed she was just making it up. The next morning PJ takes some breakfast with him for Natalie and himself and goes to talk to Natalie. She lives in what looks like concrete pipes under a bridge. PJ asks Natalie about the gun and with her help they find where it was thrown to. PJ takes it to the station and tells them what happened but Detective Donald believes PJ's making up the story. They're both interviewed, and Natalie gets really worked up and at the end is really struggling with her words because the Detective keeps cutting her off and twisting her words. They ask if they can take her fingerprints and this really distresses Natalie.
A little while later they are called out to the bridge above where Natalie lives and she's standing on the side about to jump. PJ talks to her and tells her that Maggie wouldn't have wanted her to do that, and that he needs her help to find Maggie's killer. She tells him she doesn't know who killed her, and PJ tells her that he knows it wasn't her, and so do the others because her fingerprints didn't match the ones on the gun. He convinces her to come down for Maggie.
The episode ends, after PJ's packed up Natalie's stuff because he's found her a place to stay and packing Maggie's coat for her after smelling it one last time, with PJ going back to the station and Paul Donald tells him the case is moving to Melbourne but it's not closed.
